The most important resources we have at national level are the people who care passionately about CSF as a whole and the regions and their members as individuals. The personnel involved in national affairs are either elected at the AGM as is the case of the President and Treasurer, or they are people who have volunteered their support. This group can, and does come from a growing number of regions. Communication takes place via the internet, telephone or face-to-face where logistically possible.
The national office is not just a place where things are done, it is a focal point for a team of people working together to support people affected by cancer. It is also a central point of contact for all the regions so that individual groups can feel part of a national organisation even though they remain totally autonomous.
It is the administrative nerve-centre for the association, and as such serves a number of important functions:
Library
A growing collection of reference books, catalogues and leaflets is housed here. The latest resource is the Listening Library, which is available to any English-speaking person in hospital. This is a very new service, and the mechanics of making loans are still being developed by Vivienne and Rosie. The catalogue is available on our publications page.
Why Benest?
The location of Benest in the Charente is purely historical – the original association was born here. When members voted to change the name to Cancer Support France in 2006, recognising the national spread of the support that was given, the local council gave us the rooms to use as their contribution to our work. As members of the local commune running this association, we are entitled to use all the Mairie facilities without charge, thus giving us a considerable saving on potential expenditure. This is why many of our national events are held here.
Each week the office is staffed by the President and a member of CSF-Charente Plus – Jane Thomas or Rosie Coleman. Vivienne is responsible for picking up all the calls to the helpline. Depending on the nature of the call, Vivienne contacts the relevant person either locally or regionally so that local help can be speedily put in place. Rosie and Jane look after the library
